How to Keep Your Bedroom Cool Without Cranking up The Air Conditioning

 

Sleeping well means sleeping cool. Although many factors go into getting a good night’s sleep, temperature is a big one. Your sleep environment should be comfortable, and that includes keeping the temperature on the cool side.

 

For most people, a comfortable sleeping temperature is between 60 to 67 degrees. Of course, your personal preference may be warmer or cooler, but it’s a good idea to err on the cool side. You want your body to be cool at night because a drop in body temperature can make you feel sleepy and help you doze off (and get a great night of sleep).

 

But when the temperature outside isn’t cool, that can be a problem for keeping your bedroom cool. The high environmental and monetary cost of air conditioning may make you feel like sleeping cool isn’t worth it. However, there are ways to cool down your bedroom without cranking down your air conditioner at night.

 

5 Ways to Keep Your Bedroom Cool

 

  • Get a great fan. A powerful fan can make a huge difference in how cool your bedroom feels. With good airflow, you can enjoy a strong cooling breeze. You may pay more for an oversized, powerful fan, but it could be worth it. If the air outside isn’t too warm after the sun goes down, open windows and even doors if security isn’t an issue, and you can get a good cross breeze.

 

  • Stop heat from coming in. During the day, your windows let heat in. Heat from the ambient air temperature and heat from sun radiation can make your bedroom hot during the day and stay hot at night. Preemptively cool down your bedroom by using blackout curtains during the day. These curtains can stop light and heat from sneaking in through your windows. It’s also a good idea to avoid opening windows or doors during the heat of the day.

 

  • Turn off your TV and computer. You may not think of the heat emitted by electronic devices, but they do generate heat that can make a difference in the comfort of your bedroom. If you have a TV, computer, or other electronic devices in or near your bedroom, turn them off before bed. It’s a good idea to avoid exposure to electronics with screens before bed anyway, as light from screens can be confusing for your body’s internal clock, your circadian rhythm.

 

  • Cool down with a chilly shower. You can use water to cool down your body temperature before you go to sleep. Take a shower or bath and turn down the temperature. It’s doesn’t have to be uncomfortably cold, but getting wet and spending time at a lower temperature can help you benefit from evaporation and a lower core temperature.

 

  • Sleep on a cool mattress. Some mattresses sleep cooler than others, and it may be a good idea to avoid a mattress that can retain heat, as some foam mattresses do. Consider an innerspring or hybrid mattress that may offer better cooling airflow with springs in the support core.

 

Temperature matters for sleep, but you don’t have to go to extremes with air conditioning to sleep cool. Plan ahead to prevent heat from gathering in your bedroom, cool down, and pay attention to how light can heat up your home.
